Our methodology

How We Research & Compare Tours

PiedrasRojas.org is an independent travel information and tour
comparison website. We research tours using official sources, current
booking listings, operator information and traveler feedback.

We do not operate the tours we compare.

Last reviewed: October 2026

Where Our Information Comes From

We do not rely on one source for every type of information. Different
sources are more useful for different questions.

Primary sources

Official Authorities

Local authorities, protected-area administrators and official
tourism organizations are preferred for factual information such as
access procedures, reservations, protected areas, elevations and
official visitor rules.

Product details

Tour Operators

Operator websites can provide additional details about itineraries,
vehicle arrangements, hotel pickup, meal service, private formats
and how a particular excursion is operated.

Current commercial data

Booking Platforms

Current booking listings are used to compare details such as
duration, published group size, guide languages, entrance-fee
arrangements, availability and product options.

Traveler Reviews

Reviews can reveal recurring practical details that are difficult
to understand from a product description alone.

Used for patterns, not isolated claims

What We Look for in Traveler Reviews

Traveler reviews are especially useful for identifying recurring patterns
concerning:

  • pickup reliability;
  • guide communication and language;
  • actual pace of the day;
  • food quality;
  • vehicle comfort;
  • unexpected additional costs;
  • differences between advertised and actual duration;
  • how operators handle groups at high altitude.

One unusual review does not automatically determine our assessment. We
look for context, consistency and recurring patterns.

How We Handle Conflicting Information

Tour information is not always perfectly consistent.

A booking page may describe an entrance fee differently in two sections,
an operator website may use different terminology from a marketplace, or a
product may be described as both private and small-group.

When sources disagree

We do not automatically choose the more favorable interpretation.

First

Check the primary source

For access rules and official procedures, we prefer the
responsible authority.

Official information carries more weight for official rules.

A tour marketplace is useful for product details but is not the
primary authority on protected-area regulations.

Then

Compare multiple product sources

We may check both the booking platform and operator website.

Agreement between independent sources increases confidence.

We are more cautious when important details remain inconsistent.

If unresolved

Use cautious wording

We do not guess simply to complete a comparison table.

You may see “check current listing” or “confirm at booking.”

We may also omit a claim entirely when it cannot be verified
with reasonable confidence.

How We Select Tours

PiedrasRojas.org does not attempt to list every tour available in San Pedro
de Atacama.

We generally prefer products that have:

  • a meaningful traveler review history;
  • a clearly described itinerary;
  • transparent group size or tour format;
  • reasonably clear inclusions;
  • current availability;
  • a useful difference from the other tours being compared.

A product is not included simply because it is available through an
affiliate platform.

How We Choose “Best” Labels

Labels such as “Best Overall,” “Best Value,” “Best Small Group” and “Best
Private” are editorial classifications.

Depending on the comparison, we may consider:

  • group size;
  • itinerary;
  • entrance fees;
  • meal inclusions;
  • pickup and drop-off arrangements;
  • guide languages;
  • review volume;
  • patterns in traveler reviews;
  • booking simplicity;
  • overall value.

The cheapest tour does not automatically rank first.
A higher-priced product may represent better value if it includes park
tickets, uses a smaller group, has stronger logistics or has a substantially
more established operating record.

How We Compare Group Size

Terms such as “small group,” “semi-private” and “private” are not used
consistently across the tour market.

We therefore look at the published passenger limit and participation rules
rather than relying only on the marketing label.

For example, a tour carrying 12 unrelated travelers remains a shared
small-group tour. A private tour should mean that only your own booking
participates, even if the vehicle could physically carry more people.

How We Handle Prices, Ratings and Review Counts

Prices, ratings and review counts change frequently.

Wherever practical, PiedrasRojas.org uses live booking components for
changing commercial information rather than permanently hard-coding exact
prices or review totals into editorial text.

When a static figure is useful for context, it may be described as
approximate or identified as a snapshot rather than a guaranteed current
value.

Affiliate Relationships

Some links on PiedrasRojas.org are affiliate links.

If you make a qualifying booking after following one of these links, we may
receive a commission from the booking platform or provider.

This does not normally increase your price.

Affiliate availability does not guarantee a positive recommendation. A
tour may receive a cautious verdict, rank below another product or be
excluded from a shortlist even when an affiliate link is available.

Why Information Can Change

Tours are dynamic products.

Operators can change:

  • prices;
  • availability;
  • group limits;
  • vehicles;
  • guide languages;
  • pickup areas;
  • meals;
  • park-ticket arrangements;
  • itinerary order.

Protected-area rules, weather and road conditions can also change the
practical operation of a tour.

For that reason, the current booking page and instructions supplied by the
operator should always be checked before payment and again before the tour.
